Watering Seedlings, Containers, Raised Beds and Greenhouses
Different growing spaces lose and receive water in different ways. A seed tray may dry within hours, while established plants in open ground can draw moisture from deep in the soil. Containers, raised beds and greenhouses therefore need to be checked separately rather than watered as though they were all the same.
Local temperature, sunlight, wind and humidity still matter. The following guidance should be adapted to the conditions in your garden.
Watering Newly Sown Seeds
Seeds need moisture to begin germination, but saturated compost can reduce the air available to them and encourage rotting.
Moisten the compost before sowing whenever practical. After sowing, use a fine rose or gentle spray so the water does not uncover small seeds, push them too deeply into the compost or wash them into groups.
The upper layer must not be allowed to dry completely while germination is taking place. Check it regularly, especially when trays are kept in warm conditions.
Covering a tray can slow moisture loss, but remove or ventilate the cover as seedlings emerge. Excessive humidity and poor air circulation can encourage fungal disease.
Watering Young Seedlings
Young seedlings have small, shallow root systems and limited reserves. They need consistent moisture, but constantly wet compost can lead to weak growth and root problems.
Check below the surface rather than watering simply because the top appears dry. Small cells dry faster than large pots, particularly beneath grow lights, on warm windowsills or in moving air.
Where practical, water seed trays from below by placing them briefly in shallow water. Remove them once moisture has moved through the compost and allow excess water to drain.
Do not leave trays standing permanently in water. Roots need access to air as well as moisture.
Watering Newly Transplanted Crops
Water transplants thoroughly when planting so the soil settles around their roots. Check them closely while their roots begin spreading into the surrounding soil.
Recently planted crops may need more frequent watering than established plants, especially in hot, sunny or windy conditions. Temporary shade can reduce stress during exceptional heat.
Once the plants are established, encourage deeper rooting by watering thoroughly and allowing the upper soil to begin drying before watering again, where the crop and soil conditions permit.
Watering Containers
Containers have a limited volume of compost and cannot draw moisture from the surrounding ground. Their needs depend on the container’s size and material, the plant, the growing medium and the weather.
Small pots dry faster than large ones. Porous terracotta loses moisture through its sides, while dark containers can become very warm in direct sun. Root-filled pots may need water much more frequently than recently planted ones.
Push a finger several centimetres into the compost and learn how the container feels when lifted. A dry container is noticeably lighter than one that has been watered thoroughly.
Apply water slowly across the surface until the whole root ball is moistened and a little excess begins to drain. Compost that has become extremely dry may shrink away from the sides, allowing water to run straight through without soaking in. In that situation, apply water gradually in several passes.
Improve Moisture Retention in Containers
Choose the largest practical container for the plant because a greater volume of compost dries more slowly.
Use a suitable container growing medium that retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain. Garden soil alone can become compacted in a pot and may not provide the balance of air and water that roots need.
A layer of organic mulch on the surface can reduce evaporation. Keep it slightly away from vulnerable stems and ensure it does not prevent you from checking the compost underneath.
Grouping containers can reduce exposure to drying wind and provide some mutual shade. Take care not to restrict air circulation where humid conditions or fungal disease are a concern.
Check Container Drainage
Every outdoor container needs adequate drainage holes. Water trapped around the roots can cause many of the same symptoms as drought, including wilting and yellowing leaves.
Do not routinely leave containers standing in full saucers after watering or heavy rain. Empty excess water unless the crop temporarily requires a water reservoir and the conditions make this appropriate.
Pot feet can help drainage where containers stand on a solid surface. Check that roots, soil or debris have not blocked the drainage holes.
Watering Raised Beds
Raised beds often warm earlier and drain faster than the surrounding ground. Shallow beds and those built on a solid base are especially vulnerable to drying.
Beds open to the soil below can allow roots to travel deeper and may retain useful moisture for longer. The soil mixture also makes a major difference: a very free-draining mix will need more frequent attention than one containing sufficient mature compost and mineral soil.
Check several places within the bed. Edges and corners often dry faster than the centre, while areas shaded by established plants may remain moist.
Apply water slowly enough to soak down through the root zone. A mulch of compost, straw, grass clippings, leaves or another suitable material can reduce surface evaporation.
Avoid Overwatering Raised Beds
Good drainage does not mean a raised bed should be watered automatically every day. Frequent shallow applications can keep roots close to the surface and waste water.
Inspect the soil below the mulch before watering. If it remains moist at root depth, wait and check again later.
If water runs straight through without spreading into the bed, the soil mixture may be excessively free-draining or have become difficult to re-wet. Adding suitable organic matter and applying water slowly in stages can help.
Watering Greenhouse Beds
Greenhouse soil receives no natural rainfall and depends entirely on the gardener. It can become dry at depth even when the surface appears damp.
Check the soil with a trowel and water deeply around the root zones. Large fruiting crops such as tomatoes and cucumbers can use substantial amounts of water during warm weather and active growth.
Keep moisture reasonably consistent. Repeated cycles of severe drying followed by heavy watering can stress plants and contribute to problems such as fruit splitting.
Mulching greenhouse beds reduces evaporation, while ventilation helps control excessive temperature and humidity.
Watering Greenhouse Containers
Greenhouse containers can dry exceptionally quickly because of high temperatures and vigorous plant growth. During hot periods, some may need checking more than once a day.
Water thoroughly rather than adding a small amount to the surface. Ensure that the root ball has not dried and pulled away from the container’s sides.
Drip systems can be useful, but inspect every outlet regularly. A blocked emitter can leave one plant dry even though the rest of the system appears to be working.
Automatic irrigation should be adjusted as plants grow and weather conditions change. It should not continue delivering the same amount during cool or cloudy periods without checking whether that water is still needed.
Ventilation and Humidity
Water and ventilation are closely connected in a greenhouse. Poor ventilation can trap heat and humidity, while excessive heat can increase plant water loss.
Open vents and doors as conditions require, taking account of wind, night temperatures and the crops being grown. Avoid routinely soaking leaves and floors late in the day if this will leave the greenhouse damp overnight.
In very hot, dry climates, carefully managed shading can reduce temperature and water demand. In cooler or humid regions, too much shade may slow growth and keep conditions damp.
Plan for Absence
Before leaving the garden, water crops thoroughly, move suitable containers out of intense afternoon sun and group them where they are protected from drying wind.
Mulch exposed soil and check that irrigation systems are working evenly. Test any timer or drip system before relying on it.
Do not place plants permanently in standing water simply as a precaution. The method must suit the crop, container and expected conditions.
