How to Keep Moisture in Your Soil

Keeping water in the soil is often more effective than simply watering more frequently. Healthy soil, protective ground cover and thoughtful planting can reduce evaporation, improve water absorption and help plants cope with periods of heat and drought.

The best method depends on your soil, climate, crops and available materials. A mulch that performs well in a hot, dry garden may create slug problems or keep the ground excessively wet in a cool, damp location.

Improve the Soil With Organic Matter

Mature compost helps soil manage both wet and dry conditions.

In sandy soil, organic matter increases the amount of water and nutrients held around plant roots. In heavy clay, it helps create a more open structure through which water and air can move.

Apply mature compost regularly rather than trying to transform the soil with one very heavy application. It can be spread on the surface and left for soil organisms to incorporate naturally.

Avoid repeatedly digging or cultivating wet soil. This can damage its structure, particularly in clay ground, making it harder for water to enter and drain.

Keep the Soil Covered

Bare soil is directly exposed to sun, wind and heavy rain. Its surface can dry, overheat, crust or erode.

A mulch forms a protective layer between the soil and the weather. It slows evaporation, softens the impact of rain and can reduce competition from weeds.

Mulch does not replace watering, but it can help the water you apply remain available for longer. Always check beneath it before watering because the soil may still be moist even when the mulch surface is dry.

Using Compost as Mulch

Mature compost is a practical mulch for vegetable beds. It protects the surface while gradually contributing organic matter to the soil.

Spread it around established plants without burying their stems or crowns. The layer does not need to be excessively deep to be useful.

Compost is less likely than coarse materials to obstruct sowing and planting, making it well suited to intensively used beds. It may not suppress established perennial weeds on its own, so deal with those before applying it.

Straw

Straw creates a light, insulating layer that can reduce evaporation and protect the soil from intense sun.

It is particularly useful around larger established crops such as tomatoes, squash and fruiting plants. Apply it after the soil has been watered and warmed sufficiently for the crop.

A very thick layer applied to cold soil can slow spring warming in cooler climates. Straw may also provide shelter for slugs, snails or rodents, so inspect underneath it where these are common.

Use clean straw that has not been contaminated with persistent herbicides. Keep dry straw away from flames, machinery and other ignition risks, especially in regions with hot, fire-prone summers.

Hay

Hay can also cover soil effectively and often contains more leafy material than straw. As it breaks down, it contributes organic matter.

However, hay may contain mature grass and weed seeds. It can also carry residues from herbicides used on the field from which it was cut.

Use hay only when you know its source. Monitor for germinating seeds and avoid material treated with chemicals that could damage garden crops.

Grass Clippings

Fresh grass clippings are readily available in many gardens and can form a useful short-term mulch.

Apply them in thin layers and allow each layer to begin drying before adding more. A thick mass of fresh clippings can become slimy, compacted and short of air.

Do not use clippings from lawns recently treated with herbicides or other unsuitable chemicals. Avoid grass containing mature weed seeds and material from diseased lawns.

Grass clippings break down quickly, so they need replenishing more often than straw or woodchip.

Fallen Leaves

Leaves protect the soil and return useful organic matter as they decompose.

Whole leaves can blow away or form a dense wet layer, depending on the species and local weather. Shredding or mixing them with coarser material helps them remain in place and break down more evenly.

Leaves work well around established perennial plants, shrubs and fruit trees. They can also be used on vegetable beds, provided they do not smother young plants or make spring sowing difficult.

Avoid using leaves showing serious disease around plants that could be affected by the same problem.

Woodchip

Woodchip is long-lasting and particularly useful on paths, around fruit trees, shrubs and established perennial areas.

Apply it to the soil surface rather than digging fresh woodchip into vegetable beds. When woody material is incorporated into the soil, its decomposition can temporarily reduce the nitrogen available nearby.

Surface woodchip does not usually cause the same problem within the main root zone. Over time, its lower layer begins breaking down and contributes organic matter.

Use untreated wood from a reliable source. Avoid piling it against trunks, stems or crowns, where persistent dampness can encourage decay.

In annually cultivated vegetable beds, compost or faster-decomposing mulches may be easier to manage than coarse woodchip.

Chop and Drop Mulching

Chop and drop involves cutting suitable garden plants and leaving the material on the soil surface rather than removing it to a compost heap.

The cut material shades the soil, slows evaporation and gradually returns organic matter. It can also reduce the work involved in moving large quantities of plant material around the garden.

Cut the material into manageable lengths and spread it loosely around established crops. Thick, wet piles can become airless, so use several lighter applications where necessary.

Suitable material can include healthy crop leaves, non-seeding weeds and soft prunings. Do not use diseased plants, persistent weed roots or weeds carrying mature seeds.

Avoid placing material directly against vulnerable stems. In gardens with serious slug or rodent problems, inspect beneath the mulch and adjust its depth if it creates excessive shelter.

Living Mulches

A living mulch uses low-growing plants to cover and protect the soil. Green manures can serve a similar purpose when beds would otherwise remain bare.

Living roots support soil organisms and help maintain soil structure. Foliage reduces the amount of ground exposed to sun, wind and heavy rain.

However, living plants also use water. In a very dry climate or around young crops, they may compete for limited moisture. Choose species carefully and cut them back before they overwhelm the main crop.

Living mulch is often easiest to manage beneath established fruit trees, around widely spaced perennial plants or during periods when a bed is not being used for vegetables.

Planting to Shade the Soil

As crops grow, their leaves naturally shade the ground. Sensible spacing can reduce the amount of bare soil exposed to direct sun.

This does not mean crowding plants together. Overcrowding increases competition for water and nutrients and can restrict airflow.

Use spacing appropriate for the mature size of the crop. In hot climates, some crops may benefit from light afternoon shade provided by taller plants or temporary shade material. In cool or humid climates, maintaining sunlight and air movement may be more important.

Reduce Unnecessary Soil Disturbance

Every time the soil is turned or repeatedly cultivated, damp soil is exposed to the air and can lose moisture.

A no-dig or minimal-disturbance approach keeps the soil structure and fungal networks more intact while leaving fewer moist layers exposed.

Remove weeds with minimal disturbance where practical, then cover the cleared surface again. This is particularly valuable in hot, windy conditions.

Control Competing Weeds

Weeds draw water from the same soil as crops. This competition becomes more significant during dry weather.

Remove weeds before they become large, but avoid leaving the ground bare afterwards. Replace their cover with a suitable mulch or crop.

Some non-invasive low-growing plants can be managed as living cover, but persistent weeds should not be allowed to spread through productive beds.

Slow Water and Help It Soak In

Very dry, compacted or sloping soil may shed water before it can penetrate.

Apply water slowly and pause if it begins to run across the surface. Shallow level basins around appropriate plants, beds arranged across a slope and other contour-based methods can slow runoff.

Avoid creating deep hollows directly against stems or tree trunks. Water should soak through the root zone without remaining permanently pooled around the plant.

Protect the Garden From Drying Wind

Wind can remove moisture from plants and soil surprisingly quickly.

Permeable barriers such as hedges, mesh and spaced fencing reduce wind speed while allowing some air to pass through. Solid barriers can create turbulence on the sheltered side.

Place wind protection so it does not create excessive shade or restrict necessary ventilation. Temporary protection may be enough for young plants while they establish.

Match the Method to Your Climate

In a hot, dry climate, deeper mulches may be valuable for reducing evaporation and protecting the soil from extreme temperatures.

In a cool, wet climate, an excessively deep mulch can keep the ground cold and damp, shelter slugs and delay spring warming. Apply it more lightly, pull it back temporarily or wait until the soil has warmed.

Where wildfires are a risk, avoid allowing dry organic mulch to accumulate beside buildings, ignition sources or regularly used machinery. Follow local fire-safety advice.

There is no requirement to use the same mulch throughout the garden. Compost may suit vegetable beds, woodchip may suit paths and perennial areas, and chop and drop may be useful around larger established plants.

Monitor the Results

Lift the mulch occasionally and inspect the soil. Check its moisture, smell and condition, and look for signs of slugs, rodents or fungal problems.

If the soil remains saturated, reduce the mulch layer and investigate drainage. If it continues drying quickly, increase the cover, improve the soil gradually and consider protection from sun or wind.

Moisture retention is not achieved through one material or technique. It develops by improving the soil, keeping it appropriately covered and adapting the garden to its local climate.
