Tomato Flowers but No Fruit: Blossom Drop and Poor Pollination

A tomato plant can appear vigorous and produce many flowers without developing tomatoes. The flowers may remain open for several days and then fall, leaving an empty joint where the fruit should have formed.

This is known as blossom drop. It occurs when a flower is not successfully fertilised or when the plant is too stressed to continue supporting it.

Tomato flowers are self-fertile, but successful fruit set still depends on suitable temperatures, pollen movement, adequate moisture and a reasonably healthy plant. When one of these conditions is disrupted, flowers may fall without producing fruit.

How Tomato Flowers Become Fruit

Each tomato flower contains both the male and female structures needed for pollination.

Pollen must be released from the anthers within the flower and reach the receptive part of the same flower. Movement caused by wind, insects or vibration helps release this pollen.

After successful fertilisation:

  • The yellow petals begin to fade

  • The flower may close

  • The petals eventually fall

  • The small green ovary behind the flower begins to swell

  • A young tomato becomes visible

If fertilisation fails, the flower usually separates at its joint and falls from the truss.

How to Tell Whether a Tomato Has Set

Look directly behind the flower.

A successfully set tomato begins as a very small green swelling. It may remain tiny for a short time before growth becomes obvious.

A flower that has not set may:

  • Remain unchanged

  • Turn pale or dry

  • Develop a yellowing flower stem

  • Fall from the plant

  • Leave no swelling behind it

Do not remove fading petals too quickly. The fruit may already be developing beneath them.

What Is Blossom Drop?

Blossom drop is the loss of flowers before fruit develops.

It is a plant response rather than a specific disease. A tomato may abandon flowers when conditions are unsuitable for pollination or when the plant cannot support further fruit.

Possible causes include:

  • Excessive heat

  • Cold temperatures

  • High humidity

  • Very dry air

  • Inadequate pollen movement

  • Irregular watering

  • Excessive nitrogen

  • Inadequate light

  • Root stress

  • Severe pest or disease pressure

  • An already heavy fruit load

More than one cause may be involved.

Heat and Tomato Pollination

High temperatures are among the most common causes of poor tomato fruit set.

Extreme heat can:

  • Reduce pollen production

  • Make pollen less viable

  • Prevent pollen from being released

  • Dry out the flower

  • Make the female part of the flower less receptive

  • Increase water stress throughout the plant

Warm nights can be particularly damaging because the plant has less opportunity to recover from daytime heat.

The precise temperature at which pollination begins to suffer varies with the variety, humidity, growing conditions and duration of the heat. Problems often become more noticeable when daytime temperatures remain above approximately 30–32°C and nights stay above about 21–24°C.

A single hot afternoon may not prevent fruit set. Several hot days and warm nights during flowering are more likely to cause blossom drop.

Helping Tomatoes Set Fruit During Hot Weather

It is not always possible to control outdoor temperatures, but plant stress can be reduced.

Helpful measures include:

  • Keeping soil moisture consistent

  • Watering deeply before plants become severely stressed

  • Applying organic mulch

  • Ventilating greenhouses and polytunnels fully

  • Using temporary light shade during extreme heat

  • Avoiding severe pruning

  • Retaining enough healthy foliage to cool and protect the plant

  • Avoiding heavy feeding during heat stress

Shade should reduce the most intense heat without leaving the plant in deep shade throughout the day.

Do not strip leaves away in an attempt to expose the flowers. Healthy foliage supports the plant and helps protect developing fruit from sunscald.

Once temperatures become more suitable, later flowers often set normally.

Cold Temperatures and Fruit Set

Tomatoes are warm-season plants. Cold nights can reduce pollen production and prevent normal fertilisation.

Prolonged exposure to cool conditions may also slow growth and cause flowers to remain undeveloped or fall.

Plants raised indoors should not be moved outside too early. Wait until frost risk has passed and night temperatures are consistently suitable for tomatoes.

Under cover, closing doors and vents before a cold night may retain some warmth, but ventilation should resume when conditions improve.

Cold-related blossom drop is usually temporary. New flowers may set once warmer weather returns.

High Humidity and Tomato Pollination

High humidity can make tomato pollen sticky. It may remain clumped inside the flower instead of being released.

This is a common problem in poorly ventilated greenhouses and polytunnels.

Signs that high humidity may be involved include:

  • Condensation remaining inside the structure

  • Foliage staying damp

  • Little air movement

  • Flowers falling despite suitable temperatures

  • Dense, overcrowded growth

Improve ventilation by opening doors, vents and sides where possible. Increase spacing and remove only the foliage necessary to maintain airflow.

Water the soil rather than wetting the entire plant, particularly late in the day.

Very Dry Air and Pollination

Very low humidity combined with heat can also reduce fruit set.

The flower’s receptive surface may become too dry for pollen to germinate successfully. The plant may also be losing water faster than its roots can replace it.

Maintain steady root moisture and reduce excessive heat where practical. Avoid repeatedly spraying flowers with water because wetting them does not guarantee pollination and may create other problems in humid or enclosed conditions.

Does a Tomato Plant Need Bees?

Tomatoes are self-fertile and do not need pollen from another tomato variety to produce fruit.

However, insects can improve pollination by vibrating or moving the flowers. Bumblebees are particularly effective because their vibration releases pollen from inside the flower.

Wind and routine movement of the plant may provide sufficient vibration outdoors. Under cover, where wind and insect activity may be limited, the flowers can benefit from gentle manual movement.

How to Pollinate Tomato Flowers by Hand

Hand pollination does not require opening or damaging the flower.

Suitable methods include:

  • Gently tapping each flower truss

  • Lightly shaking the plant’s support

  • Briefly vibrating the flower stem with a suitable tool

  • Creating gentle air movement inside a greenhouse

Do this during the middle part of a dry day, when humidity is moderate and pollen is more likely to be released.

The plant should only be moved gently. Vigorous shaking can damage flowers, stems and developing fruit.

Hand pollination cannot overcome pollen made non-viable by extreme temperatures. If heat or cold is the underlying cause, fruit set may not improve until conditions change.

Why Greenhouse Tomatoes Flower but Do Not Set Fruit

Covered growing spaces can protect tomatoes from cold and rain, but they can also create conditions that interfere with pollination.

Common greenhouse causes include:

  • Excessive heat

  • Warm nights

  • High humidity

  • Poor ventilation

  • Lack of air movement

  • Limited insect access

  • Irregular watering

  • Dense foliage

Open vents and doors early enough to prevent heat from building. Maximum ventilation may be needed during hot weather.

Gently moving the supports can assist pollen release, but temperature and humidity still need to be suitable.

Can Too Much Nitrogen Prevent Tomatoes Forming?

Excessive nitrogen encourages leafy growth. A plant may become tall, dark green and vigorous while producing relatively few flowers or failing to hold those it produces.

Signs may include:

  • Thick, soft stems

  • Large, dark-green leaves

  • Rapid upward growth

  • Many side shoots

  • Few flower trusses

  • Limited fruit development

Stop applying high-nitrogen fertiliser and allow the plant to use the nutrients already available.

Do not attempt to correct the problem by removing large quantities of leaves. The plant still needs healthy foliage for photosynthesis and fruit development.

Once flowering and fruiting begin, use a suitable feed for fruiting plants according to its instructions rather than increasing the concentration.

Can a Tomato Plant Be Underfed?

A severely undernourished plant may not have enough resources to support flowers and fruit.

Possible signs include:

  • Pale foliage

  • Weak growth

  • Small leaves

  • Thin stems

  • Few flowers

  • General lack of vigour

Before feeding, check whether the roots have enough space and whether the soil is waterlogged or excessively dry. A plant with damaged roots may show deficiency-like symptoms even when nutrients are present.

Container-grown tomatoes depend on regular feeding because watering gradually removes nutrients from the compost. Apply a suitable liquid organic feed at the recommended strength once the plant is established and fruiting.

Inadequate Light and Poor Fruit Set

Tomatoes need strong light to create the energy required for flowering and fruit development.

Plants growing in inadequate light may become:

  • Tall and stretched

  • Weak-stemmed

  • Excessively leafy

  • Slow to flower

  • Poor at setting or developing fruit

Shade from buildings, trees, nearby crops or overcrowded tomato foliage may be responsible.

Move containers to a brighter position where possible. In permanent beds, reduce competition or plan a sunnier growing position for the following season.

Removing a small amount of obstructive foliage may improve light and airflow within an extremely dense plant, but severe defoliation will reduce the plant’s overall ability to produce energy.

Water Stress and Blossom Drop

Tomatoes need reasonably consistent soil moisture, particularly while flowering and developing fruit.

If the soil becomes severely dry, the plant may shed flowers to conserve water. Repeated drying followed by heavy watering creates further stress.

Waterlogged soil can also cause flower loss because oxygen-starved roots cannot absorb water and nutrients normally.

Check the soil approximately 5–8 centimetres below the surface:

  • If it feels dry, water deeply.

  • If it remains moist, do not water automatically.

  • If it is saturated, improve drainage and allow excess moisture to move away.

Mulching can reduce rapid drying and help maintain steadier moisture.

Root Restriction and Poor Fruit Production

A tomato growing in a small container may flower but struggle to maintain fruit because its roots have limited access to water and nutrients.

Root-bound plants can change from adequately moist to severely dry very quickly, especially during hot or windy weather.

Use containers suited to the mature size of the variety. Large indeterminate tomatoes need considerably more root space than compact patio plants.

If a plant is already established in an undersized container, moving it may be difficult. More frequent monitoring of water and nutrition can reduce stress, but it cannot entirely replace adequate root space.

Can Pruning Cause Flowers to Fall?

Moderate pruning of indeterminate tomatoes does not normally prevent fruit set. Severe or sudden pruning can create stress, particularly during hot weather.

Removing too many leaves can:

  • Reduce photosynthesis

  • Increase plant temperature

  • Expose flowers and fruit to intense sun

  • Increase water stress

  • Slow fruit development

Prune gradually and according to the plant’s growth type.

Determinate tomatoes should not normally have their side shoots heavily removed because their flowering stems form part of a naturally limited crop.

Should Side Shoots Be Removed to Improve Fruit Set?

Removing side shoots does not directly pollinate flowers.

On an indeterminate tomato trained as a single stem, removing selected side shoots can improve access, support and airflow. It may also reduce competition between excessive vegetative growth and existing fruit.

However, removing every side shoot is not essential in all growing systems. Indeterminate tomatoes can be grown with two or more stems if they have sufficient room and support.

Determinate tomatoes should not be routinely stripped of their side shoots.

Choose a training method and apply it consistently rather than reacting to poor fruit set with severe pruning.

Can Topping Make a Tomato Produce Fruit?

Topping stops the main stem from continuing to grow. It does not correct failed pollination.

Topping an indeterminate tomato may be useful when:

  • It has reached the top of its support

  • The growing season is nearing its end

  • New flowers will not have time to produce ripe fruit

  • Existing tomatoes need time to mature

Remove the growing tip approximately two leaves above the highest retained flower truss.

Do not top a plant early simply because it has flowers but no fruit. First check heat, humidity, water, light, feeding and pollen movement.

Once topped, the main stem cannot produce further flower trusses unless new side shoots are allowed to grow.

Can Too Many Tomatoes Reduce Further Fruit Set?

A plant already carrying a large crop may produce fewer new tomatoes because its resources are being directed towards existing fruit.

This is a natural limitation rather than a fault.

Small-fruited varieties may carry many tomatoes, while large-fruited varieties normally support fewer. Comparing the number of fruits without considering their eventual size can give a misleading impression of productivity.

Maintain healthy foliage, moisture and nutrition so the plant can support the crop it already carries.

Are the First Flowers Different?

The first flower truss may develop while the plant is still adjusting to transplanting or unsettled weather. As a result, early flowers sometimes fall while later trusses set normally.

Large-fruited varieties may produce unusually large or fused early flowers. These can develop into irregularly shaped fruit. This is not necessarily harmful, although the fruit may be heavily ribbed or scarred.

Do not judge the plant’s eventual productivity only by its first flowers.

Could Pests Cause Flowers to Drop?

Pests can interfere with flowering directly or weaken the whole plant.

Inspect flowers and growing tips for:

  • Aphids

  • Thrips

  • Mites

  • Caterpillars

  • Beetles

  • Other feeding insects

Thrips may feed inside flowers and damage developing tissue. Aphids and mites can distort tender growth and reduce plant vigour.

A few insects do not necessarily explain widespread blossom drop. Consider temperature, humidity and watering at the same time.

Could Disease Prevent Fruit Set?

A plant affected by serious disease may lose flowers because its leaves, stems or roots are no longer functioning properly.

Look for:

  • Spreading leaf spots

  • Dark stem lesions

  • Sudden wilting despite moist soil

  • Severe distortion

  • Mosaic patterns

  • Rapid leaf death

  • Stunted new growth

Blossom drop without other disease symptoms is more likely to be environmental or physiological.

Flowers Are Setting, but the Tiny Tomatoes Stop Growing

A newly set fruit can remain small for several days before obvious growth begins. This is not necessarily a problem.

If many young tomatoes remain very small for a prolonged period, consider:

  • Extreme heat

  • Cool weather

  • Inadequate light

  • Water stress

  • Poor root health

  • Nutrient imbalance

  • Heavy existing fruit load

  • The natural growth rate of the variety

Avoid heavy feeding in response to slow growth. Correct the general growing conditions and monitor the fruit over time.

What to Do When Tomato Flowers Keep Falling

Work through the likely causes in a logical order.

1. Check the Temperature

Review daytime and night-time conditions during flowering. Extreme heat or cold may be the main cause.

2. Check Soil Moisture

Feel below the surface. Correct severe dryness or prolonged saturation.

3. Improve Ventilation

Open covered growing spaces and reduce excessive humidity.

4. Assist Pollen Movement

Gently tap flower trusses or shake the support during a dry part of the day.

5. Review Feeding

Stop excessive nitrogen and use a suitable feed for fruiting crops only as needed.

6. Assess the Light

Check whether buildings, trees or dense foliage are creating excessive shade.

7. Inspect for Pests and Disease

Look closely at flowers, growing tips, leaves and stems.

8. Avoid Severe Pruning

Retain enough healthy foliage to support the plant and protect developing fruit.

What Not to Do

When flowers fail to set fruit, avoid:

  • Flooding dry plants with repeated watering

  • Applying several fertilisers at once

  • Removing large quantities of healthy leaves

  • Topping the plant before identifying the cause

  • Spraying flowers without a diagnosed pest or disease

  • Shaking plants violently

  • Assuming every fallen flower indicates permanent crop failure

The plant may begin setting fruit naturally once environmental conditions improve.

A Quick Blossom-Drop Checklist

Flowers fall during very hot weather

Heat has probably reduced pollen viability or increased plant stress. Maintain moisture, improve ventilation and provide light temporary shade if necessary.

Greenhouse flowers fall in humid conditions

Improve airflow and gently vibrate the flower trusses.

The plant is dark green and extremely leafy

Excessive nitrogen may be promoting foliage rather than fruit production.

The plant wilts and the soil is dry

Water deeply and improve moisture consistency.

The plant wilts but the soil is wet

Investigate drainage and root health instead of adding more water.

The plant is tall, pale and weak

It may not be receiving enough light.

Only the first flowers fall

The plant may be recovering from transplanting or unsuitable early-season weather.

Flowers fall but later trusses set normally

The earlier problem was probably temporary.

Fruit Set Often Improves When Conditions Improve

Blossom drop can be disappointing, but it does not usually mean that the entire tomato crop has failed.

Tomato plants continue producing flowers throughout their natural growing period. Indeterminate varieties may form many more trusses, while determinate varieties normally flower and crop within a more concentrated period.

Concentrate on the conditions the plant needs:

  • Suitable temperatures

  • Consistent moisture

  • Adequate light

  • Balanced feeding

  • Healthy roots

  • Good ventilation

  • Gentle pollen movement

  • Enough healthy foliage

Once the weather becomes more favourable or the underlying stress is corrected, later flowers will often set and develop normally.
