Pricking Out, Potting On and Hardening Off Seedlings

Young seedlings eventually need more room, stronger growing conditions and a gradual introduction to life outdoors. Pricking out, potting on and hardening off are three separate stages that help prepare them.

Not every plant requires every stage. Seedlings grown individually in modules may not need pricking out, while fast-growing crops may move directly from their first pot into the garden. Let the plant’s development, roots and local weather guide the timing.

What Does Pricking Out Mean?

Pricking out means moving small seedlings from a shared seed tray into individual pots or modules.

Seeds are often sown together to save space during germination. Once the seedlings begin developing, they compete for light, water and root space. Separating them allows each plant to grow independently.

Pricking out is normally carried out when seedlings are large enough to handle and have begun producing their first true leaves.

The first leaves to emerge are the seed leaves, or cotyledons. The true leaves appear afterwards and begin to resemble the mature plant.

Do not wait until the seedlings are badly overcrowded or their roots have become tightly tangled.

Prepare Before Lifting the Seedlings

Prepare the new containers before removing anything from the seed tray.

You will need:

  • Clean pots or module trays with drainage

  • Suitable growing compost

  • Plant labels

  • A pencil, dibber or small tool

  • Water

  • A shaded, protected place for recovery

Fill the new containers with compost and gently firm it. Make a hole large enough to receive the seedling’s roots without folding or crushing them.

Water the original tray beforehand if the compost is dry. Moist compost holds together more readily and releases the roots with less damage.

Handle Seedlings Carefully

Loosen the compost beneath a group of seedlings with a pencil, plant label or small tool. Lift from below rather than pulling the plant upwards.

Hold a seedling by one of its seed leaves whenever possible. Avoid squeezing the stem because even slight damage can kill the plant.

If a seed leaf is damaged, the seedling can often continue growing. A crushed stem is far less likely to recover.

Gently separate tangled roots. Try to retain as much root as possible, but do not worry if a small amount is lost during the process.

Work methodically and keep exposed roots out of direct sunshine and drying air.

Replant at the Correct Depth

Lower the roots into the prepared hole and ensure they point downwards rather than curling back towards the surface.

Gently firm the compost around the seedling so there are no large air spaces around the roots.

Most seedlings should be planted at approximately the same depth at which they were growing. Some stretched seedlings can be planted slightly deeper, but not every crop tolerates having its stem buried.

Tomatoes can produce roots from their buried stems and are commonly planted more deeply. Avoid applying this technique automatically to other crops.

Label each container immediately with the crop, variety and original sowing date.

Care After Pricking Out

Water gently after transplanting to settle the compost around the roots.

Place the seedlings in a bright, protected position away from strong direct sunshine for a short recovery period. Return them to good light once they have settled.

Some plants may look slightly wilted immediately after being moved. This should be temporary. Persistent collapse may indicate root damage, excessive heat or unsuitable watering.

Keep the compost moist but not saturated. Newly disturbed roots need oxygen as well as water.

Avoid feeding immediately unless the compost or crop specifically requires it. Allow the seedlings time to resume active growth first.

What Does Potting On Mean?

Potting on means moving a growing plant into a larger container.

Unlike pricking out, the plant is normally moved with its existing root ball intact. The purpose is to provide more space, fresh growing medium and sufficient nutrients for continued development.

Seedlings may need potting on once, several times or not at all before planting outside. This depends on the crop, initial container size and how long it must remain protected.

Tomatoes, peppers and aubergines commonly require potting on because they are often raised for an extended period before outdoor conditions are suitable.

Recognise When a Plant Needs More Space

Do not use the height of the seedling as the only guide. Examine both its leaves and roots.

A plant may need potting on when:

  • Roots are visible through the drainage holes

  • The root ball holds the shape of the container

  • Growth has slowed despite suitable light and warmth

  • The compost dries much faster than before

  • Leaves are becoming crowded

  • The plant is top-heavy or unstable

  • Lower leaves begin yellowing without another clear cause

A few visible roots do not always mean that potting on is immediately necessary. The aim is to move the plant before it becomes severely root-bound, not to place a tiny seedling in an unnecessarily large pot.

Increase Pot Size Gradually

Move the seedling into a container moderately larger than the current one.

A very large pot holds more wet compost around a small root system. This can make careful watering difficult and increase the risk of poor drainage.

Gradual increases make it easier to maintain the correct balance of moisture and air. They also use less compost and growing space.

Choose pots that are deep enough for the crop and make sure every container has effective drainage holes.

Fast-growing crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and squash may need more space sooner than slower-growing peppers or many herbs.

How to Pot On a Seedling

Water the plant beforehand if the root ball is dry, then allow excess water to drain.

Partly fill the new container with suitable compost. Remove the plant by supporting it between your fingers and gently turning or squeezing the original pot.

Do not pull the plant out by its stem.

Place the intact root ball into the new container and adjust the compost beneath it until the plant sits at the correct depth.

Fill around the sides, gently firm the compost and water thoroughly. Allow the container to drain before returning it to its growing position.

Use the Right Compost for Continued Growth

Seed-sowing compost is designed for germination and early development. It may not contain enough nutrients to support larger plants for an extended period.

When pricking out or potting on, use a peat-free potting compost or another suitable growing medium for young plants.

The compost should drain freely while retaining enough moisture for steady growth. Dense or waterlogged compost restricts oxygen around the roots.

Do not add excessive fertiliser in an attempt to accelerate growth. Strong feeding can damage young roots or produce soft, weak plants.

Healthy development depends on balanced light, temperature, moisture, root space and nutrition.

What Is Hardening Off?

Hardening off is the gradual process of preparing protected seedlings for outdoor conditions.

Indoor-grown plants are accustomed to relatively stable temperatures, weak air movement and filtered light. Outside, they encounter wind, direct sunshine, cooler nights and faster changes in moisture.

Moving seedlings directly from a protected room or greenhouse into the garden can scorch leaves, damage stems and stop growth.

Hardening off allows the plant to adjust gradually before it is planted permanently.

When to Begin Hardening Off

Begin when the seedlings are well rooted, strong enough to handle outdoor movement and approaching their appropriate planting time.

Check the weather forecast carefully. Do not begin with tender plants during severe cold, strong winds or extreme heat.

The correct timing depends on the crop and location. Cool-season vegetables can usually begin adjusting to outdoor conditions earlier than tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and other frost-sensitive plants.

Harden Seedlings Off Gradually

Begin by placing seedlings outside for a short period in a sheltered position.

Choose mild conditions with protection from strong wind and intense direct sunshine. Bring the plants back under cover afterwards.

Gradually increase the time spent outside and introduce more sunlight and air movement. Allow the plants to experience cooler conditions without exposing tender crops to damaging cold.

The process commonly takes around one to two weeks, but it should not be treated as a rigid timetable. Poor weather may require a longer period, while seedlings already raised in a ventilated greenhouse may need less adjustment.

Continue checking moisture because small containers can dry rapidly outdoors.

Protect Seedlings From Strong Sunlight

Leaves raised behind glass or under artificial light can be scorched by sudden exposure to direct sunshine.

Begin in bright shade or gentle morning light. Increase exposure gradually while observing the leaves.

White, pale or papery patches can indicate sun scorch. Move affected plants into more sheltered conditions and slow the hardening-off process.

Even crops that eventually require full sun need time to develop resistance to stronger outdoor light.

Introduce Wind Carefully

Gentle air movement strengthens stems, but strong wind can break or dehydrate young plants.

Start in a protected area beside a wall, hedge or cold frame. Gradually introduce more exposed conditions as the seedlings become sturdier.

Tall or top-heavy seedlings may require temporary support. Improving their light and spacing before hardening off will also reduce weakness.

Do not leave small pots where they can be blown over or allowed to dry unnoticed.

Watch Temperatures Closely

A sunny spring day may be followed by a very cold night. Daytime warmth does not mean tender plants are ready to remain outside permanently.

Return vulnerable seedlings to protection whenever temperatures fall below what the crop can safely tolerate.

An unheated greenhouse or cold frame may not remain frost-free. Check the temperature inside the structure rather than assuming it provides complete protection.

If the weather changes suddenly, pause the process. Keeping plants sheltered for a few extra days is safer than losing them to a preventable cold night.

Planting Seedlings Into the Garden

Plant out once the seedlings are hardened off and local conditions are suitable.

Water the plants before transplanting. Prepare the bed or container and make holes large enough to receive the root balls without crushing them.

Remove each plant carefully and place it at the appropriate depth. Firm the surrounding soil gently and water thoroughly.

Choose a calm, cloudy day or plant later in the day when possible. This reduces immediate water loss and stress from strong sunshine.

Provide suitable protection from pests, wind or unexpected cold. Continue monitoring moisture until the roots establish in the surrounding soil.

Avoid Planting Too Early

Large seedlings can create pressure to plant outside before conditions are ready. This usually happens because seeds were started too early or protected growing space has become crowded.

Planting tender crops into cold soil does not necessarily give an earlier harvest. Growth may stop, roots may struggle and the plant can take a long time to recover.

If plants are ready but the weather is not, pot them on if necessary and improve their spacing, light and airflow.

Next season, adjust the sowing date using what you have learned. A younger, actively growing seedling is often more successful than an older plant that has been held back for weeks.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Problems during these stages commonly result from:

  • Handling seedlings by their stems

  • Pricking out before seedlings are large enough to manage

  • Waiting until roots are severely tangled

  • Using containers without drainage

  • Moving a small seedling into an excessively large pot

  • Burying stems that should remain above the compost

  • Overwatering after transplanting

  • Moving plants directly into full sun
