Mulching a Garden: What to Use and How to Do It

Mulching means covering the soil around plants with a layer of organic or inorganic material. In an organic garden, natural mulches protect the soil, conserve water, suppress weeds and gradually return organic matter to the ground.

There is no single best mulch for every garden. The right choice depends on the materials available, the crop, the season and whether your conditions are hot and dry or cool and wet.

Why mulch garden soil?

A suitable mulch can:

  • Reduce water loss from the soil

  • Protect the surface from intense sun and heavy rain

  • Suppress many annual weeds

  • Reduce soil erosion

  • Prevent mud from splashing onto crops

  • Moderate changes in soil temperature

  • Provide food and shelter for soil organisms

  • Add organic matter as it decomposes

Mulching does not remove the need to observe your soil. Check beneath the mulch occasionally, as the surface may look dry while the soil below remains moist.

When should you apply mulch?

Mulch can be applied at almost any time, but it is usually most effective when the soil is already moist and largely free from established weeds.

Spring mulch helps retain moisture as temperatures rise. Summer mulch protects soil during hot, dry weather. Autumn mulch covers empty beds and allows organic material to break down over winter.

In cold or wet climates, applying a thick mulch too early in spring can delay soil warming and provide shelter for slugs. Allow the soil to warm first if this is a problem in your garden.

Compost and well-rotted manure

Finished compost is one of the most useful all-purpose mulches. Spread it over the soil surface, usually around 2–5 cm deep, and plant or sow into it.

Well-rotted manure is particularly useful for hungry crops such as squash, courgettes and brassicas. It should be thoroughly decomposed before being used near growing plants. Avoid repeatedly applying large amounts, as nutrients—especially phosphorus—can accumulate in the soil.

Neither compost nor manure normally needs to be dug in. Soil organisms will gradually mix the material with the soil below.

Grass clippings

Fresh grass clippings are rich in nitrogen and can form an effective moisture-retaining mulch around established crops.

Apply them in thin layers and allow each layer to begin drying before adding more. A thick mass of fresh clippings can become slimy, compacted and unpleasant-smelling.

Do not use clippings from lawns recently treated with herbicides or other chemicals. Keep wet grass away from direct contact with tender plant stems.

Dry leaves and leaf mould

Autumn leaves protect bare soil and provide food and shelter for soil organisms. Whole leaves may blow around, so dampen them, shred them with a mower or cover them with a small amount of compost.

Partly or fully decomposed leaf mould is an excellent mulch, particularly around woodland plants, fruit bushes and perennial crops. It improves moisture retention and soil structure but usually contributes fewer nutrients than garden compost.

Straw and other dry plant material

Straw is useful around strawberries, potatoes, squash and other established crops. It reduces water loss and keeps fruits away from wet soil.

Apply it loosely so that water can still penetrate. Straw can temporarily reduce nitrogen near the surface as it decomposes, but this is less of a concern when it remains on top of the soil rather than being dug in.

Dry stems, spent crops and other disease-free plant material can also be cut into shorter pieces and used as surface mulch.

Using the chop-and-drop technique

Chop and drop is the practice of cutting healthy plants or unwanted growth and leaving the material on the soil surface where it grew. Instead of carrying everything to a compost heap, the garden itself becomes the composting area.

Cut the material into manageable pieces and spread it loosely around established plants or over an empty bed. Softer leaves and stems decompose quickly, while woody material takes longer and provides a more persistent covering.

Suitable materials include:

  • Healthy vegetable leaves and stems

  • Green manure crops

  • Annual weeds that have not formed mature seeds

  • Comfrey and other nutrient-rich foliage

  • Soft hedge trimmings

  • Spent flowers and herbaceous plants

Keep fresh material slightly away from crop stems and avoid creating a thick, wet layer. Do not use diseased plants, mature seed heads or the living roots of persistent perennial weeds.

Chop and drop saves time, reduces the need to move bulky material and returns nutrients close to where the plants obtained them. It also reduces evaporation and provides habitat for soil organisms. The result may look less formal than a bare or compost-covered bed, but it closely follows the way organic matter is recycled in natural systems.

Cardboard as a mulch

Plain brown cardboard can suppress weeds and protect the soil while a new bed is being created. Remove tape, staples and glossy labels, overlap the edges and wet the cardboard so it stays in position.

Cover it with compost, leaves, straw or another organic material. Cardboard should not become a permanent barrier; it will gradually soften and decompose.

Avoid applying very thick layers, particularly on poorly drained soil, because they may temporarily restrict water and air movement.

Wood chips

Wood chips work particularly well on paths, around fruit trees and bushes, beneath hedges and in perennial areas.

Fresh wood chips are best left on the surface rather than dug into the soil. Surface-applied chips do not usually remove significant nitrogen from the root zone. As fungi gradually break them down, they contribute organic matter and help create a stable soil surface.

Keep deep wood-chip mulch away from tree trunks and woody stems to prevent them remaining constantly damp.

How thick should mulch be?

The appropriate depth depends on the material. Compost may be spread 2–5 cm deep, while loose straw, leaves or wood chips can be applied more deeply because they settle over time.

A thin layer may not suppress weeds or conserve much water. A very thick, wet layer can restrict airflow, shelter pests or prevent light rain from reaching the soil.

Start with a moderate layer, inspect the soil beneath it and add more when necessary.

Mulching around young plants and seedlings

Small seedlings can be overwhelmed by heavy mulch. Leave a clear space around them until they are established, then gradually move the mulch closer.

Keep mulch away from the crowns and stems of plants that are vulnerable to rotting. When direct-sowing, leave the seed row uncovered or use a fine layer of mature compost rather than coarse material.

Possible problems with mulch

Mulch can provide hiding places for slugs, snails and rodents. This does not mean that mulching should always be avoided, but it may need modifying when pest pressure is high.

Use thinner layers, avoid placing wet mulch against vulnerable seedlings and check beneath boards or dense material regularly. In very wet weather, temporarily pulling mulch back can help the soil surface dry.

Mulch containing weed seeds, herbicide residues or diseased material can introduce problems. Know where imported materials came from and inspect them before use.

Let the garden recycle its own materials

The best mulch is often one that is readily available, safe to use and suited to the plants being grown. Compost, leaves, grass clippings, straw, wood chips and chopped garden plants can all protect and improve the soil.

Begin with what your garden already produces. By composting materials in place—including through chop and drop—you reduce waste, conserve moisture and allow nutrients to cycle naturally through the garden.
