Direct Sowing or Starting Seeds Indoors?

Some crops grow best when their seeds are placed directly into the garden, while others benefit from being started indoors or under cover. Choosing the right method can improve germination, reduce losses and produce healthier plants.

There is no single method that suits every crop or garden. Your location, climate, available protection, pest pressure and length of growing season all influence the decision.

What Is Direct Sowing?

Direct sowing means placing a seed where the plant is expected to grow and mature. This might be an outdoor bed, a greenhouse border or a large permanent container.

The seed germinates in the soil and the young plant develops without being transplanted from another container.

Direct sowing is simple and requires less equipment. It also avoids disturbing sensitive roots. However, seeds and young seedlings are exposed to changing weather, pests and competition from weeds.

Consider Your Growing Space

Your available space may determine which sowing method is practical.

A bright greenhouse or propagation area allows many seedlings to be raised under controlled conditions. A dark windowsill does not provide the same advantage, even if the room is warm.

If indoor light is limited, direct sowing at the appropriate time may produce stronger plants. A grow light can help, but it should be suitable for the size of the growing area and positioned correctly.

Outdoor bed space matters too. Starting plants in modules can keep the garden productive by allowing the next crop to grow while the previous one finishes.

Consider Local Pest Pressure

Starting seeds under cover can protect vulnerable crops during their earliest stage.

Brassica seedlings, for example, may be easier to protect in modules before being planted beneath netting. Young lettuce plants can be raised away from slugs and planted once they are more established.

This does not remove the need for outdoor protection. A healthy transplant can still be damaged quickly after planting.

Some Crops Can Be Sown Both Ways

Many vegetables do not demand one particular method.

Beans and squash are often started under cover in cooler regions but direct sown where the growing season is warm and long enough.
