Biodiversity and Natural Predators in the Garden

An organic garden does not depend entirely on the gardener for pest control. Birds, insects, amphibians and other predators consume large numbers of pests, often before we notice that a problem is developing.

Supporting these natural predators will not create a pest-free garden. It creates a more resilient growing space in which one species is less likely to multiply without opposition.

The aim is to provide varied habitats, avoid unnecessary harm and allow useful predator populations to establish naturally.

Why Natural Predators Arrive After the Pests

Predators need a source of food. Ladybirds will not gather in a garden before aphids appear, and hoverflies will not lay eggs beside a plant without suitable prey.

This means there is normally a delay between the arrival of a pest and the predators that feed on it. During that period, an aphid colony or caterpillar population may appear to be growing unchecked.

Immediately treating every infestation can interrupt this natural response. A contact spray may kill the pest, but it can also kill the predators feeding among them.

Where established plants are not in immediate danger, observe the infestation for several days. Look for predator eggs, larvae and signs of parasitism before deciding whether intervention is necessary.

Ladybirds and Their Larvae

Ladybirds are among the best-known garden predators. Both adults and larvae of many species consume aphids, scale insects, mites and insect eggs.

Ladybird larvae look very different from adult ladybirds. They usually have elongated, segmented bodies and may be dark grey or black with orange, yellow or red markings. Their unfamiliar appearance means they are sometimes mistaken for pests.

Look for them among aphid colonies and on nearby leaves. Ladybird eggs are often yellow or orange and laid in small groups close to a source of food.

Avoid spraying aphids when ladybirds or their larvae are present. If intervention is essential, use a targeted physical method on the most vulnerable part of the plant instead of treating the entire crop.

Hoverflies

Adult hoverflies resemble small bees or wasps, but they do not sting. They are important pollinators and are often seen hovering around flowers.

The larvae of many hoverfly species feed on aphids. They are legless and may resemble small green, cream or brown maggots. A single larva can consume many aphids while it develops.

Hoverflies benefit from open flowers that provide easily accessible nectar and pollen. Suitable plants can include:

  • Dill

  • Fennel

  • Coriander

  • Parsley allowed to flower

  • Yarrow

  • Alyssum

  • Calendula

  • Phacelia

  • Locally suitable native wildflowers

Allowing a few herbs and vegetables to flower can provide valuable food without requiring a separate ornamental garden.

Lacewings

Adult lacewings have delicate, transparent wings and are often active around dusk or attracted to lights.

Their larvae are active predators of aphids, mites, thrips, whitefly and small insect larvae. They have long bodies and prominent jaws and may be mistaken for harmful insects.

Lacewing eggs are usually laid individually on the ends of fine stalks. This unusual arrangement helps prevent newly hatched larvae from eating one another.

Dense shrubs, hedges and sheltered vegetation can provide resting and overwintering habitat. Avoid excessive tidying during autumn and winter when no specific pest or disease problem is present.

Ground Beetles

Many ground beetles hunt at soil level, feeding on slugs, insect eggs, larvae and other invertebrates.

They are usually active at night and shelter beneath stones, logs, boards, mulch and low vegetation during the day. Their dark colour and rapid movement can make them appear threatening, but many are valuable predators.

Provide some undisturbed ground-level shelter close to growing areas. Avoid repeatedly disturbing every part of the soil or removing all surface cover.

Not every beetle is beneficial, so identification remains important. If you are unsure, photograph it and use the Friend or Foe feature in Your Growing Companion before taking action.

Parasitic Wasps

Parasitic wasps are generally much smaller and less conspicuous than familiar social wasps. Many are harmless to people and play an important role in controlling garden pests.

Different species lay their eggs in or on aphids, caterpillars, whitefly, beetle larvae and other insects. Their developing young eventually kill the host.

Aphids that become swollen, brown or golden may have been parasitised. These are often called aphid mummies. A small round exit hole indicates that the adult wasp has already emerged.

Leave parasitised aphids in place where practical. They are evidence that natural control is working.

Adult parasitic wasps often feed on nectar, particularly from small, open flowers. Maintaining a succession of suitable flowers can support them throughout the growing season.

Predatory Bugs and Earwigs

Several true bugs prey on aphids, mites, caterpillar eggs and other small insects. Their behaviour varies by species, and some may feed on plants as well as prey.

Earwigs also have a mixed reputation. They can damage soft fruit, flowers and seedlings, but they consume aphids, insect eggs and decaying material.

Whether they are helpful or troublesome depends on their numbers, available food and the crop involved. Earwigs living among aphids may be useful, while a dense population feeding inside ripening fruit may require management.

Avoid treating an entire species as universally beneficial or harmful. Observe what it is doing in the specific situation.

Spiders

Spiders capture flies, moths, leafhoppers and many other insects. Ground-hunting spiders also take prey at soil level without constructing obvious webs.

They are generalist predators, meaning they do not distinguish between pests and beneficial insects. Nevertheless, their presence contributes to overall population control.

Leave webs undisturbed when they are not obstructing access or creating a genuine problem. Avoid broad treatments that remove both spiders and their prey.

Birds

Many garden birds feed insects and caterpillars to their young. Starlings, tits, robins, wrens, blackbirds and other locally occurring species can remove substantial numbers of invertebrates.

Birds can also damage fruit, disturb mulch or pull seedlings while searching for food. Their contribution should therefore be considered part of the wider garden balance rather than entirely beneficial.

Support birds with trees, hedges, shrubs, safe nesting places, clean water and varied vegetation.

If crops require netting, secure it tightly and inspect it regularly. Loose netting can trap or kill birds, hedgehogs and other wildlife.

Frogs, Toads and Other Amphibians

Frogs and toads feed on slugs, insects and other small invertebrates. They need moisture, shelter and safe access through the garden.

A pond can support amphibians, but even a small water feature must include a gently sloping exit so animals cannot become trapped. Avoid leaving steep-sided open containers where wildlife may drown.

Shelter can be provided with logs, stones, dense planting and undisturbed damp areas. Avoid slug treatments that may threaten amphibians directly or unnecessarily reduce their food supply.

Hedgehogs

Where hedgehogs occur naturally, they may consume beetles, caterpillars and other invertebrates. Slugs can form part of their diet, although hedgehogs should not be presented as a complete solution to a slug problem.

Hedgehogs require connected habitat. Small access gaps beneath suitable fences can allow them to travel between gardens.

Check long grass before cutting and inspect compost heaps before turning them. Avoid loose netting and deep, uncovered holes.

Do not introduce hedgehogs into areas where they are not native or where local authorities advise against it.

Bats

Bats feed on nocturnal flying insects, including moths whose caterpillars may feed on crops.

They benefit from insect-rich habitat, mature trees, water and dark travel routes. Excessive outdoor lighting can disrupt their feeding and movement.

Reduce unnecessary night lighting and retain suitable roosting habitat where it is safe to do so. Bat species and protection laws vary by country, so seek local guidance before disturbing a possible roost.

Provide Flowers Throughout the Season

Predatory insects often need nectar or pollen during part of their life cycle.

Aim for a succession of flowers rather than one short period of abundance. Include plants with different shapes, heights and flowering times.

Suitable choices may include early-flowering fruit trees and shrubs, flowering herbs, native flowers, umbellifers such as dill and coriander, and late-flowering plants that provide food into autumn.

Choose plants appropriate to your climate and avoid species known to be invasive locally.

Provide Water Safely

Water supports birds, insects, amphibians and mammals, particularly during hot, dry weather.

Use shallow containers with stones or sloping edges that allow safe entry and escape. Keep bird baths clean and replace stagnant water regularly.

Deep containers, uncovered water butts and steep-sided ponds can become hazards. Add secure covers or reliable escape routes.

During drought, a consistent water source may be especially valuable, but it should not create permanently wet conditions around crops that encourage slugs or plant disease.

Retain Shelter Without Harbouring a Serious Problem

Logs, stones, mulch, hollow stems, hedges and undisturbed corners provide habitat for predators. The same places may also shelter slugs, snails and other pests.

This does not mean shelter should be eliminated. Position it thoughtfully and inspect areas close to vulnerable seedlings.

Retain varied habitat around the garden while keeping propagation areas and newly planted beds sufficiently open to monitor. A garden can be wildlife-friendly without becoming unmanaged.

Avoid Broad and Unnecessary Treatments

Organic treatments can still harm natural predators.

Soaps and oils may kill insects through direct contact regardless of whether they are pests or predators. Neem-based products and biological treatments also require careful, targeted use.

Before applying anything, ask whether the pest has been identified, whether the crop is in genuine danger and whether predators are already present. Consider whether the affected part can be removed or the treatment restricted to individual plants.

The least disruptive effective action is usually the best starting point.

Build Biodiversity Gradually

A resilient garden develops over time.

New flowers, water sources and shelters may attract visible wildlife quickly, but stable predator populations take longer. Weather, surrounding land use and the wider local environment will influence what arrives.

Observe which predators occur naturally and design habitat around them. Record changes across several seasons rather than judging success from a single outbreak.

Some pest damage will still occur. That damage provides food for predators and forms part of a functioning garden ecosystem.

The purpose of biodiversity is not to create perfection. It is to build a garden in which plants, pests and predators exist in a balance that allows us to harvest worthwhile crops without unnecessary harm.
